We are utilizing participatory science and action research as a tool for advocating data justice to ensure that youth understand that data collection, analysis, and decision-making processes are inclusive, transparent, and equitable.
Engaging local youth through participatory science empower them to actively contribute to the understanding of one of the major environmental challenges in the Coachella Valley which is of AIR QUALITY.
Smoke Sense is a research project developed by Environmental Protection Agency that enables citizen scientists to engage with a mobile phone application to explore current and forecast maps of air quality, learn about how to protect health from wildfire smoke, and record their smoke experiences, health symptoms, and behaviors taken to reduce their exposures to smoke.
The Smoke Sense app is available as a free download on the Google Play™ store and the Apple App Store™. Smoke Sense app users participate anonymously, and their identities are not captured.
Participants engage with the app and earn unique badges each week as Explorers, Learners and Observers. Participants earn the “Explorer” badge when checking their air quality in the “Fire and Smoke Near Me” feature of the app; the “Learner” badge when visiting the “Air Quality 101” feature; and the “Observer” badge when reporting smoke and health observations. By using these Smoke Sense functions and becoming an active citizen scientist, everyone can earn a badge while adding to what we know about air pollution, the effects of smoke, and what people do to reduce exposure.
